By Ray Ampoloquio · Aug 26, 2026 Rockstar told Dazed that Grand Theft Auto VI trades consequence free rampages for reactive NPCs, police, and lasting story choices.
Zoom image: A Dazed exclusive with Rockstar details Grand Theft Auto VI's reactive world, its first playable couple in Jason and Lucia, and a team that has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2. The day before its Netflix reveal, Rockstar Games handed the first real deep-dive on Grand Theft Auto VI to fashion magazine Dazed, putting Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval front and center on the cover all the while letting its creators talk mechanics for the first time. The full feature is worth your time, but the one takeaway we have here is that the most chaotic franchise, the one that has not had a new mainline entry since Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, is becoming its most disciplined, and in a good way.
For two decades the pitch of a Grand Theft Auto game was dropping you into a city, grabbing a weapon, and doing whatever you want with no real consequence. Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North , is telling us that this era is over. Walk down a street in the next GTA with a rifle now and the world answers back, with pedestrians and police reacting the way they might in real life.
The non-player characters that used to stand around as scenery behave less like scenery than ever, and you can no longer move through Vice City like an untouchable god .
What the Dazed deep-dive confirms about GTA 6

Play as GTA 6 's Jason and Lucia together or split off solo, the series' first couple in the lead
The systems Rockstar detailed in the Dazed feature.
For the first time in the series, the leads are a playable couple and you can run with them together or venture off alone. The switching is fluid in a way the old three-character setup never was. Cruise as Jason while Lucia rides shotgun scrolling her phone, then, when a job goes sideways, take the wheel one second and lean out the passenger window firing the next.
" Lucia is also the first fully realized female lead in a mainline GTA , a real turn for a series long criticised for its treatment of women.
