Grand Theft Auto VI is the first mainline Grand Theft Auto built on a romantic criminal partnership, and the Extended Look finally put Jason and Lucia on the screen together, in the middle of a failed drug deal, a shoot-out, on the couch at home, and doing their own things. After we covered the systems and overarching world of the next GTA , it's high time that we put the spotlight on the two people all of this is built around.

First, the basics. Jason Duval is an ex-military drug runner and Lucia Caminos is a fighter fresh out of prison, who is also the series' first non-optional female lead. Rockstar Games describes the pair as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style duo who stumble into a statewide conspiracy after a heist goes wrong in Vice City .

The romantic partnership between these two are the crux of the entire gaming experience. What you do to each other matters and will affect how the story plays out. The switching and consequences systems exist as sub-features of that bond.

The footage makes it clear multiple times that you're not just controlling two characters, unlike in Grand Theft Auto V .

In this game, you're in charge of steering the couple's relationship. Whether you nurture the romance or let it sour is completely up to you.

The apartment scenes does a lot of the heavy lifting for their relationship dynamic. Lucia asking Jason which dress to wear to a party while he cracks a beer is the kind of ordinary evening couples watching it are very familiar with. It also dispels the earlier rumours that Jason and Lucia aren't really romantically involved and more like partners-in-crime who happen to have an intimate relationship.

What we've seen so far suggests that these two are as close to old-aged married lovers as can get for people of their respective ages.

The hand-offs where one drives and the other shoots, Jason scooping Lucia up after a robbery, the two bound side by side later on and working to get free together, all tell a story of a couple who care about each other.

Just to be clear about this, we still don't know how these two met and what led to their relationship. Rockstar hasn't told how the romance works or where it goes. Even the shared free-roam features, the jet skis, the gym sessions, the nightlife, read a little differently once you realize that they are things this couple does together.

With that said, the entire world appears designed to hem as a unit. The description-based wanted system , the lifestyle effects, and how NPCs react, including that lady wielding a hammer on each hand also featured in the first trailer , all apply to both, and can reflect the state you have put them in. Play them ragged or keep them sharp, and the city responds to the pair you have actually shaped.

The takeaway is simple, though. Jason and Lucia are not two protagonists who just so happen to share a map. They are the story and the reason why GTA 6 is what it is.
