By Ray Ampoloquio · Oct 8, 2026 In GTA 6 , Jason and Lucia's romance is optional, built through open world time together, and neglecting it shapes how their story plays out.
Zoom image: Rob Nelson says GTA 6's relationship system is separate from the criminal one and fully optional. The most talked-about moment in Grand Theft Auto VI , particularly from Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look was not a shootout or a car chase. Rather, it was how two people in a relationship leaned on each other between jobs.
Now, in a long new interview, Rockstar Games has explained how that relationship actually works and the headline is that almost none of it is mandatory. Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto titles, the upcoming sixthquel is building its dual-protagonist story around a romance you can nurture, neglect or, believe it or not, skip entirely.
Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North , laid the system out in Rockstar's big interview with IGN. Jason and Lucia's bond is a living thing you tend to in the open world , with real consequences for how their story ends, designed so that it doesn't impose any of it on you.
If you need the quick version of who they are, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are GTA 6 's two leads, a couple as much as a crew and two central names in a still-growing cast . Rockstar recently told LOVE Magazine their version of the American Dream is a modest one , a home and their debts paid off, with Lucia the driven one and Jason more reactive. They've spent the past couple of months filling in the bigger picture of the pair and this interview is the first time Rockstar has explained how it all works.
The first thing to understand is that the relationship is its own system, walled off from the crime side. "There is a system that tracks what sort of criminal you are," Nelson said. "And then there is also a relationship system.
" This means how you behave as an outlaw and how you treat your partner are measured on different tracks.
The relationship is a separate track from the criminal one, which is the key thing Nelson wanted understood.

So how do you tend the relationship? The same way you would tend a real one, by spending time together. Nelson's description is specific.
"You manage the relationship in the way you hopefully nurture any relationship, which is by spending time together," he said. "So being in the open world and exploring together or doing activities together, playing pool or mini golf or kayaking, normal slice of life things. Or robbing stores together, robbing banks together.
So, a quiet afternoon of mini golf and a smash-and-grab on a corner store both count as time spent together. The game is asking you to be in the moment. Texting as well as ignoring your partner's messages can wear at the bond, the same way going quiet on someone does in real life.
It is a low-key, always-on layer that sits under whatever else you are doing in Leonida .
Nelson was blunt that the main missions will not carry the relationship load for you. "Just going through the story and playing missions together may not be enough to keep them together," he said. "You'll have to keep them together by spending a bit of time together in the open world.
" Neglect, in other words, is a choice with a price and the ending bends around the choices you make.
